Person Memorial Hospital Welcomes Renowned Cardiologist Dwayne D. Callwood, MD

Person Memorial Hospital is proud to welcome Dwayne D. Callwood, MD, to its medical staff as a specialist in Interventional and General Cardiology. Dr. Callwood brings more than three decades of experience in advanced cardiac care and interventional procedures to the hospital and community.
Dr. Callwood’s career spans distinguished clinical roles at leading institutions such as Duke Health, Cone Health, ECU Health Heart and Vascular, and UNC Hospital. He has a robust background in both inpatient and outpatient cardiology and has performed thousands of interventional procedures including percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), diagnostic catheterizations via multiple vascular access sites, intra-aortic balloon pump placement, temporary pacemaker insertion, IVUS/FFR-guided diagnostics, pericardiocentesis, and more.
His approach to cardiology focuses not only on cutting-edge technology and intervention but also on whole-person care. He has been commended for his dedication to patient education, compassionate bedside manner, and commitment to collaborative care with hospital and community teams.

Dr. Callwood holds board certifications in Internal Medicine and Cardiology and completed his interventional cardiology fellowship at Duke University Hospital following his general cardiology training at UNC Memorial Hospital. He has held academic and clinical teaching appointments at Duke and UNC, mentoring cardiology fellows, residents, and medical students over the years.
A graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, Dr. Callwood began his medical journey with a BS in Biochemistry from Old Dominion University. His breadth of emergency and cardiovascular experience uniquely positions him to deliver comprehensive, timely care to patients facing both chronic and acute heart conditions.
