Person Memorial Hospital offers a full range of rehabilitative services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech language pathology. We provide inpatient and outpatient services for a variety of different conditions such as stroke, work injuries, falls, orthopedic injuries, inability to swallow and speech impediments.

Our services include evaluation, rehabilitation and conditioning. Our goal is to return you to your fullest level of function as quickly as possible. 

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy provides services to all age groups to maximize physical function and mobility following an illness or injury. It also helps to restore normal function following surgery.

Therapeutic Exercise and Modalities

Acute and chronic pain, Joint disorders, Fibromyalgia, Arthritic conditions, Post-operative recovery, Gait Training, Post amputees, Neurological problems, Post-operative joint replacement, Balance and equilibrium disorders, and Neurological conditions such as stroke or other diseases that affect the brain or nervous system.

Orthotic and Prosthetic Evaluation

Orthotic and Prosthetic Evaluation determines the need for splints or bracing. Services offered include evaluation of proper fit and use of artificial limbs and splinting devices, as well as teaching patients how to use and feel more comfortable with these assistative devices.

Therapeutic & Neuromuscular Exercise

Adaptive strategies for home and community activities are taught by our trained therapist.

Occupational Therapy

A wide variety of Occupational Therapy Services are offered including training clients in activities of daily living, driving evaluations, lymphedema management, and hand therapy and splinting.

Elbow and Hand Function

Trained therapists evaluate needs and teach the use of the following: Splinting, Exercise, Scar Management, Improving muscular control after stroke, and Treatment to decrease pain and swelling.

Functional Capacity Evaluations

Functional Capacity Evaluations are tests of an individual's ability to return to work following an injury. Evaluations assess an individual's level of function for specific tasks, determine the need for job re-training or vocational rehabilitation, and assess limitations following an injury or other diseases that affect the brain or nervous system.

Activities of Daily Living

Person Memorial has a lab with a kitchen, bath and laundry room for patients to re-learn activities that will enable them to care for their daily needs independently or with minimal assistance.

Patients may learn to wash clothes and dishes, go to the bathroom, take a bath, get in and out of bed, and prepare meals. These tasks help patients return to their living situation with renewed confidence and help family members to feel more secure in the patient's safety.

Visual Training

Exercise and training to use the eye's ability to work together to improve problems with visual scanning and spatial relationships between objects.

Energy Conservation

Training to simplify the environment to decrease the amount of work required to complete a task.

Lymphedema Management

Lymphedema is a chronic persistent swelling. It is a permanent overload of the lymphatic system due to poor tissue fluid drainage resulting from surgery, trauma, radiation treatment or congenital insufficiency of the lymphatic system. Once a patient develops lymphedema there is no cure, but symptoms can be managed effectively through complete decongestive therapy (CDT). CDT consists of skin care, manual lymph drainage (MLD), compression bandages and exercise.

Person Memorial Hospital has a certified lymphedema therapist in our occupational therapy department for patients needing care of chronic swelling.

Speech and Language

Speech and Language Therapy provides evaluation and individualized speech therapy programs for children with communication difficulties and adults with communication and/or swallowing difficulties.

Adult Communication

Changes in talking, listening, reading and writing due to a stoke or other disease that affects the brain or nervous system such as: speech that is slurred or difficult to understand, difficulty putting thoughts into words, and difficulty understanding others despite the lack of hearing problems.

Adult Swallowing

Changes in eating or swallowing due to a stroke, dementia or other diseases of the brain or nervous system such as: coughing while eating or drinking, frequent choking, weight loss, wet or gurgled sound to vice, and holding food in the mouth without swallowing.

Pediatric Communication Disorders

Some children may need a speech therapy evaluation if they: Do not talk by age 2 years, Do not use 2-3 word sentences by age 3 years, Are not understood by strangers at age 3 years, Have trouble following simple directions by age 4 years, or if the parents are embarrassed or disturbed by their speech.

Work-Conditioning Program

The goal of the work-conditioning program is to prepare an injured individual to return to their former occupation.

Under the supervision of a trained therapist, individuals can re-learn tasks that they performed prior to their injury or illness. These tasks, such as climbing a ladder, lifting a box or turning a wheel, are structured to duplicate the tasks the individual performed at his worksite prior to his injury.

Industrial Ergonomics Job Evaluations

The purpose of an ergonomic job evaluation is to determine if adjustments to the work site can decrease the chance of employee injury. This evaluation is done at the work site with a report provided to the employer.

This program also can help the employer assess the need for applicant screenings to ensure appropriate job placement in positions requiring special manual skills or heavy lifting.

Driving Assessments

Our trained therapist can provide an individual with the following: Test ability to drive with safety, Test thinking and physical skills, Test reaction time, Test visual skills needed for safe driving.

Cardiac Rehabilitation Program

Our cardiac rehabilitation program is a medically supervised program to help individuals with heart disease recover faster and return to full and productive lives. It is an individualized program of exercise, education and counseling to help participants begin heart healthy living.

Programs usually last for 36 sessions or 3 months. The length of time varies depending upon an individual's heart problems, physician recommendations and insurance coverage. The program includes cardiovascular conditioning exercise, which includes warm-ups and cool-downs, plus an intensive exercise workout on treadmills, bikes, rowers, nu-steps and the total gym. A weekly educational session on heart healthy topics is offered to patients and family members. Sessions include such topics as diet, management of heart disease, weight control, smoking cessation, exercise, cardiac medication, etc. Psychological and nutritional counseling are available in addition to the support of the rehabilitation group.
